Holiday sales begin, it's the first time that some items will be available…. but definitely won't be among the crazies up at 4am to get to the top of the line to make some wild dash for the $99 flat-screen television or the Crazy Elmo toy. (Black Friday is the second single biggest shopping day for retailers and got its
name because in the days of old so much shopping was done on this day that it would turn the tide for many stores and put them in the black, or, make them profitable.)

Dec. 2 – First Saturday in December – weekends are important because it means free time to shop. The early holiday and Christmas shopper should be more than halfway through shopping list. Average shoppers are just starting to browse.

Dec. 3 – First Sunday – weekend Christmas shopping can be done but stores close the usual earlier time on Sundays.

Dec. 7 – Pearl Harbor Day – it isn't recognized by most but is very important to war veterans. The President usually gives a speech to a Veterans group and lays a wreath in honor of those who died on Pearl Harbor Day and in World War II.

Dec. 9 – Second Saturday – only two full weeks to go before Christmas. Where did the time go and where did the year go? To your disguised annoyance, you are starting to hear the ubiquitous phrase, 'Finished all your Christmas shopping yet?' Christmas shopping has to pick up speed or panic will set in. You are running out of time to enjoy some quality Christmas entertainment with your family.

Dec. 10 – Second Sunday – go to church if you haven't been attending so that you won't look like a 'Christmas only attendee.' Need to squeeze in some shopping and must start sending out Christmas greeting cards this week.

Dec. 16 – Third Saturday, First Day of Hanukkah – it's unbelievable that there's only one full week to go before Christmas. Make supermarket shopping list for Christmas Eve and Christmas dinner preparations.

Dec. 17 – Third Sunday – exactly one week before Christmas. Make sure Christmas toys and presents in hiding are still undiscovered. Make final plans for family dinner on Christmas Day.

Dec. 21 – oh dear me!!! Only three days to go before Christmas. Do last minute planning, get as many chores as possible out of the way, finish all Christmas and supermarket shopping. Assign final preparatory tasks to family members as necessary. Go over plans for Christmas Dinner.

Dec. 22 – First Day of Winter – My goodness!! you still have shopping to do!!? You dread going to the mall this weekend. Pray for a miracle to find one of those needle in a haystack salesperson who will hold hand and get you 95% through your Christmas shopping list.

Dec. 23 – Last Saturday before Christmas – Now The Single Biggest Shopping Day of the Year!!!! The mall is absolutely crazy and there are no sales people anywhere. I did not grow up in a very religious family. We didn't really talk about religion very often, and we only went to church a couple times a year. Nevertheless, we loved Christmas. There was the gift giving, the decorating, and most of all, the Christmas tree.

Christmas trees were a fine tradition in my family. We would put more effort into decorating the tree every year than we would put in to almost anything. We would start picking out new Christmas decorations month ahead of time, get the whole room prepared, and finally go and pick out a tree.

Sometimes, we would have to get an artificial tree. We moved around a lot because of my dad's job, and some apartments simply won't accommodate a nice big Christmas tree. Nevertheless, some of the artificial Christmas trees were pretty nice. My favorite times, however, were when we got to go out to the woods and pick out a fresh tree to cut down and take back home. There is nothing like natural xmas trees. They have a beautiful scent, a natural look, and a majesty that imitations can never quite capture.

Of course, the Christmas tree ornaments are every bit as important as the tree itself. In my family, we would switch off duty as lead decorator. In particular, we would each have a chance to pick out the Christmas topper. One year, I even made a Christmas Star myself out of papier-mâché. When I saw it years later, I realized that it was not a very well made art project. At the time, however, I was so proud of it. All my family complimented me on it, and it looked great above that Christmas tree. It was one of the best Christmases that I remember, and I still have pictures of it to this very day.

The meaning of Advent and why we celebrate it?

Advent is the four week period between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is a season celebrated by Christians of all denominations. Advent prepares our hearts of a time of worship on Christmas day.

Advent means “the coming.” It is a time when we look forward to and anticipate the celebration of the Christmas season. Advent can be celebrated at church and also in the home for a ceremony that just involves the family.

Advent season involves the lighting of candles in a wreath. The Advent candles can sit in a candle holder specifically designed to hold the five Advent candles or can be put into votive candle holders surrounded by a green garland wreath symbolizing the season.

Advent candelabras and wreaths range from the very expensive (used in large churches) to the affordable ones used in home celebrations. A family can construct their own Advent centerpiece so that it has the personal touch. The Advent candle setup is placed in a prominent spot in the room so that it can be a constant reminder of the miraculous birth we celebrate on Christmas Day.

One candle is lit each Sunday representing four virtues of the season: Faith, Joy, Hope, and Love. Different Christian publications list each virtue in a different order.

There are four main candles for Advent: Three blue or deep purple candles and one pink candle. The Advent portion of service usually involves a litany, a song, and the lighting of the candle. Parishioners are welcome to do additional readings on each virtue through the week to get ready for the following Sunday.

Advent can be celebrated at home also. Each night families can light the candle for the week’s virtue and read a scripture and say a prayer. Advent celebrations open up discussion between parents and kids about the real meaning of Christmas and the significance of Christ’s birth.

The last candle and usually the largest is the white candle that fits in the center of all the others. It is called the Christ candle and is lit on Christmas Day. Some churches hold special services on Christmas and some do not. Everyone can light the final candle in their homes as a celebration for the culmination of the Advent season.
